Transfer Students

What is a Transfer Student?

A transfer student is any individual who has completed college or university coursework at another institution after high school graduation. This does NOT include students who have taken dual credit in high school or a single course at a postsecondary institution while in high school (e.g., CNA course) prior to beginning full-time college enrollment.

General Policy on Transfer Admissions:

As a general rule, the Traditional Prelicensure BSN Program at EIU does not accept transfer students into the nursing curriculum once they have begun college/university coursework at another institution. This policy is in place due to the unique structure of our program, which makes it difficult for transfer students to maintain timely progression toward graduation. Key characteristics of the program relevant to transfer students:

  • The BSN program is 5 consecutive semesters in length (approximately 2.5 years).
  • Applications are accepted once per year, in the spring semester only.
  • Students admitted begin the nursing program in the spring semester of the following academic year.

Why Transfer May Not Be Advised:

Transferring can result in delays in progression and graduation, often extending a student’s plan of study unnecessarily.

Exceptions to the Policy:

While uncommon, transfer students are considered under the following conditions:

  • The student completed previously attended EIU and is returning after a break in academic progression or already holds a bachelor’s degree (e.g., post-baccalaureate).
  • The student has completed 1 semester or fewer of college/university coursework or has earned fewer than 15 credit hours total applicable to a nursing program.
  • The timing of the student’s transfer aligns with the spring application cycle of the nursing program.

Guidance for Transfer Students:

  • Each transfer request is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • If a student’s situation aligns with the above exceptions and supports timely academic progression, they may be considered for admission.
  • Transfer students interested in the nursing program at EIU should contact:

Dr. Richard Clapp, Director of Traditional Prelicensure BSN Program

Email: rmclapp2@eiu.edu

  • Students should be prepared to submit a copy of unofficial academic transcripts and discuss academic history and desired timeline.
