The Construction Management program at EIU….

• Combines hands-on learning in a variety of laboratory settings with rigorous, relevant classroom instruction.
• Teaches students about the materials and processes of construction by allowing students to “get their hands dirty”. We build things. We break things to test the limits of their strength.
• Teaches the practices and processes of the building trade, so students learn to appreciate the craft and the craftspeople who do the work of construction.
• Teaches students about modern and sustainable materials and procedures, so students learn to assist designers and construction professionals in the best ways and means to develop and build a wide range of structures.
• Teaches students about safety through both required and elective OSHA-approved courses, so students earn an added attraction to employers who seek this knowledge and ability to prevent accidents, comply with safety regulations, and reduce liability.
• Provides the opportunity for paid internships with top-notch construction companies to students who seek them. Companies like Hensel-Phelps, Bulley & Andrews, F.H. Paschen, Grunloh Building, McCarthy Building Co, Preferred Electric, Stevens Industries, and many others commonly provide internships, which often lead to careers after graduation.
• Provides students with the opportunity to participate in field trips to construction sites where the concepts they are learning about in the classroom and lab are being put into practice.
• Provides students with the opportunity to attend construction industry competitions, product shows, and events where construction companies gather, further enriching their education and encouraging the building of their personal network.
• Provides students with the opportunity to serve the community by participating in the program’s RSO (Registered Student Organization), CPR. CPR stands for Construction Project Response Team and is a student-led and managed group that helps nonprofit organizations by building projects intended to help those less fortunate.
• Opens the door to students to be a part of a timeless profession rich in its history and which provides a challenging and rewarding working life.
